Abstract

This paper presents an analysis of a Speculative Design workshop conducted within an Information Systems course. The workshop was structured to enable participants not only to imagine sociotechnical futures and propose information technology solutions, but also to critically reflect on how these future technologies might mediate relationships, practices, and experiences. The Theory of Technological Mediation (TTM) was employed as an analytical lens to understand the potential effects of the speculated technologies on future sociotechnical networks. The results indicate that participants were able to recognize the agency of the designed artifacts, understand how these technologies could reconfigure future sociotechnical networks, and discuss the associated ethical implications.
